Donald Trump suggested potential military action against Cuba, stating “Cuba is next” during a Miami investment forum on Friday.
Trump Hints at Military Operation Against Cuba
“I created a great military. I said I wouldn’t have to use it. But sometimes you have to use it. By the way, Cuba is next,” Trump said during a speech at an investment forum in Miami. He then added, “But pretend I didn’t say anything.”
The American president did not specify what actions he intends to take against the authorities in Havana.
US Plans Regarding Cuba Emerge
This is another signal from Washington suggesting the US has plans for the communist-ruled island. In recent weeks, Trump has stated he believes he “would have the honor of taking Cuba” and announced he would “do something with Cuba soon.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized that “new people” must take power on the island, and any lifting of the embargo imposed on the island depends on political changes.
Cuba Prepared for Dialogue and Potential US Intervention
Cuba is ready for “serious and responsible dialogue” with the US, according to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, in response to strained bilateral relations. His deputy, Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, stated that authorities expect a US military intervention and have ordered the army to prepare to repel a possible attack.
Cuba Faces Economic Crisis and Humanitarian Concerns
Cuba’s economy is in a deep crisis due to the US embargo on oil supplies. The humanitarian situation on the island is worsening due to power outages and transportation restrictions. Venezuela was the main oil supplier to Cuba, but those supplies were also halted after the capture of the country’s leader, Nicolas Maduro, by the US in early January.
