Trump Threatens Major Strikes on Iran and Seizure of Kharg Island

US President Donald Trump has signaled that American military forces could conduct a significant strike against Iran, while simultaneously outlining plans to seize the critical Kharg oil terminal.

The Threat of Military Action

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States military could launch a powerful strike against Iran within hours. Trump claims that Iran’s naval, air, radar, and anti-aircraft defenses, along with most of its offensive capabilities, have already been effectively neutralized.

In a statement posted on the Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized the impending nature of the operation. He also noted in a subsequent interview with Fox News that the United States maintains ongoing, albeit strained, diplomatic discussions with the Iranian government.

Strategic Control of Oil Infrastructure

Beyond immediate military strikes, Trump has declared an intent to seize Kharg Island in the near future. This maneuver is aimed at establishing total control over Iran’s oil and gas markets, a strategy he likened to previous U.S. actions involving Venezuela.

Kharg Island remains the central hub for Iran’s energy exports, processing roughly 90 percent of the nation’s crude oil. Due to the shallow nature of the Iranian coastline, which is inaccessible to large supertankers, nearly all of Iran’s production is transported via underwater pipelines to the island’s facilities.

Historical Context and Previous Escalations

The strategic importance of Kharg Island has been a focal point of previous hostilities. Shortly before a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran went into effect on April 8, American forces conducted an attack on the island.

Prior to that engagement, reports circulated that the Trump administration was considering a permanent seizure of the territory to force significant political and economic concessions from the leadership in Tehran.
