U.S. President Donald Trump warned the Nigerian government that the United States would consider a military intervention if Christians were killed, prompting the Pentagon to prepare a potential plan.
Trump Threatens Military Intervention
Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that a military intervention might occur if Nigerians continue to kill Christians. He said that should the Nigerian authorities fail to stop Christian killings by Islamists, the United States would suspend aid and could deploy troops “with guns ready for action.”
Trump added that the U.S. could “step into this presently disgraced country with weapons in hand to completely crush Islamist terrorists who commit these horrific atrocities.”
Pentagon Response
When asked about the threat, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth replied succinctly: “Yes.”
Nature of Conflict in Nigeria
Nigeria has long struggled with numerous conflicts that claim both Christian and Muslim lives, according to experts. CNN reports that local news suggest most victims are Muslims living in the northern region.
Nonetheless, U.S. conservative politicians urge recognition of Nigeria as a special concern for religious freedom. Trump previously declared that this status was granted due to an “existential threat” to Christians.
Government Denial and Current Situation
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that the country remains religiously tolerant and that such accusations are “unrealistic.”
Nigeria continues to grapple with the ongoing Boko Haram rebellion that started in 2009.
