U.S. President Donald Trump stated he is likely to withdraw troops from Italy and Spain, criticizing both countries and Germany’s performance on key issues.
Trump Considers Troop Withdrawals from Italy and Spain
U.S. President Donald Trump, when questioned on Thursday about potentially withdrawing American forces from Italy and Spain, responded, “yes, probably.” He assessed that Italy does not assist the United States, and Spain is “terrible.”
Trump made the comments while speaking in the Oval Office.
European Troop Reduction Under Review
The day prior, Trump announced that his administration was analyzing the possibility of reducing the number of American soldiers in Germany, with a decision expected soon.
Criticism of European Allies
Trump stated, “Italy doesn’t help us, and Spain is terrible, totally terrible.” He also said the U.S. “is helping Europe with Ukraine,” adding, “They made a total mess out of Ukraine.”
Sharp Criticism of German Chancellor Merz
Trump again criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, stating, “He’s doing a terrible job.” He cited issues with immigration, energy, and Ukraine, and claimed Merz criticized Trump’s approach to Iran.
Trump recounted asking Merz if he wanted Iran to possess nuclear weapons, to which Merz responded negatively, leading Trump to assert, “So I’m right. He had no answer.”
Disagreement Over Iran and Ukraine
Earlier on Thursday, Trump asserted that Merz should focus on ending the war in Ukraine and improving Germany, rather than interfering with those addressing the threat from Iran. He also accused Merz of “not having any idea what he’s talking about” regarding the U.S. and Israel’s conflict with Iran.
Merz’s Warnings on Iran Conflict
Merz had warned on Monday that a conflict between the U.S. and Iran would likely not resolve quickly, stating that the Iranians are “stronger than assumed” and the Americans “lack a convincing negotiating strategy.” He cautioned that entering conflicts in the Middle East requires a plan for exiting, referencing experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan.
