In a recent interview with *The Economist*, Steve Bannon announced that Donald Trump will likely secure a third presidential term in 2028, sparking debate over constitutional limits and political strategy.
Trump 2028
Steve Bannon, former top strategist for Donald Trump and White House adviser, told *The Economist* that the current U.S. President “certainly” will win a third term. “He will get a third term. Trump 2028 – people should come to terms with it,” Bannon said, adding that Trump “needs more time to realize everything he planned.” He further remarked, “We need him for at least one more term.”
The Will of the People, Not the Letter of the Constitution
Bannon contended that a possible third term would reflect “the will of the American people.” He said, “The will of the people is what the Constitution embodies, so I think we will be in good hands. We must finish what we started, and Trump is a tool of divine providence to make it happen.” The comments triggered controversy because the U.S. Constitution explicitly limits presidents to two terms. Bannon did not explain how the provision might be circumvented, though he claimed such a plan exists and will be disclosed at the appropriate time. When questioned whether bypassing the constitution would pave the way for dictatorship, Bannon denied the accusation outright.
Trump in His Second Term
Donald Trump is currently serving his second presidential term, having won the 2024 election. His administration focuses primarily on combating gang crime and mass deportations of immigrants, with the National Guard deployed in many cities for order‑keeping operations. Outside the country, Trump aims to end conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine. Commentators suggest his objective may be to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
