Trump’s Appeal to Putin Appears to Halt Energy Attacks in Ukraine

Ukraine confirms a night without attacks on energy infrastructure after Trump claims Putin agreed to a temporary ceasefire.

Russia Launches Extensive Aerial Attacks

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that since Thursday evening, Russia conducted attacks using an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 111 unmanned aerial vehicles of various types. Ukrainian air defense neutralized 80 of these drones. The Russian Ministry of Defense separately claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 18 Ukrainian drones over several regions including Crimea and the Black Sea.

Energy Infrastructure Spared During Attacks

Despite the extensive attacks, Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Wasyl Bodnar confirmed there were no Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure during this period. Ukraine is still recovering from previous Russian strikes that left millions without power as temperatures drop to subzero levels.

Trump Claims Putin Agreed to Temporary Ceasefire

President Trump announced he personally asked Putin not to attack Kyiv and other cities for a week, claiming Putin agreed. Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed discussions about security for Ukrainian cities during extreme winter conditions took place during Abu Dhabi talks on January 23-24. The Kremlin refused to comment on the matter.

Skepticism Among Ukrainian Officials

Lviv Mayor Andrij Sadowyj expressed doubt about Russia’s intentions, noting that with temperatures dropping to -18 degrees Celsius, Russia could use this to pressure other Ukrainian cities as they did with Kyiv. Dnipropetrovsk regional council head Mykola Lukashuk emphasized the need to prepare for difficult scenarios despite the reported energy ceasefire.
