Tusk Accuses President of “Shameless” Veto on Crypto Bill, Claims Kaczyński Wavered

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of a crypto asset regulation bill, alleging a cover-up involving the PiS party and its leaders on April 17.

Tusk’s Allegations of a “Crypto Affair”

Prime Minister Tusk stated that politicians linked to the Law and Justice (PiS) party, including President Karol Nawrocki, are fully aware of the details surrounding what he termed the “PiS crypto affair.” He described the President’s insistence on vetoing regulations designed to protect Poles as “shameless,” suggesting it was a deliberate act to benefit Zondacrypto.

Tusk asserted that information reaching PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński influenced his decision during the vote on Nawrocki’s veto. He claimed Kaczyński appeared to “tremble” after Tusk revealed details of the affair, voting against the party line and the stance of the Confederation.

Kaczyński and Błaszczak’s Abstention

The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of Kaczyński and Mariusz Błaszczak’s decision not to vote with their party, interpreting it as an acknowledgement of the validity of his arguments. He characterized their abstention as an “escape from responsibility.”

Direct Questioning of Kaczyński

During a parliamentary session, Tusk directly questioned Jarosław Kaczyński about whether he approved of leading figures within his political circle, including two presidents, allegedly benefiting from promotions offered by Zondacrypto. He pressed for an explanation regarding the financial incentives involved.

Zondacrypto Controversy

Reports indicate that the head of Zondacrypto has accused the sister of the cryptocurrency exchange’s founder, but the court has declined to pursue the case.

Social Media Response and Veto Outcome

Tusk further addressed the issue on X, stating that Kaczyński and Błaszczak “became frightened” by the truth about the “PiS crypto affair” and did not vote in favor of the President’s veto, effectively abandoning their party.

The Sejm failed to override the President’s veto on the crypto asset bill. 243 MPs voted to uphold the bill, while 191 voted against, with three abstentions. Overriding the veto required 263 votes. All 171 PiS MPs present voted against overriding the veto, while 17 MPs, including Kaczyński and Błaszczak, did not vote.
