Tusk Addresses Polish Involvement in Middle East Conflict

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that discussions are surfacing regarding potential Polish participation in the Middle East conflict, but firmly opposes such involvement.

Tusk on Potential Polish Involvement

During a press conference following the EU summit in Brussels, Prime Minister Tusk indicated that he was receiving reports suggesting that the PiS party or the President might be considering some form of Polish involvement in the war in the Middle East.

Tusk emphasized that Poland is currently focused on other security priorities, specifically protecting Poland’s eastern border, as well as that of Europe and NATO, stating this is an “absolute first-rate task.” He expressed confidence in the understanding of Poland’s allies, with whom he discussed the matter.

“I Won’t Agree to It”

Tusk noted that the conflict in the Middle East has partially diverted attention from the situation on Poland’s eastern border. He stressed the importance of maintaining global focus on Ukraine, as it directly impacts Poland’s security.

He appealed to those considering Poland’s involvement in further crises, stating, “I won’t agree to it.”

Poland’s NATO Commitments

Tusk previously stated that Poland would not send troops to Iran, explaining that the Middle East conflict does not directly threaten Poland’s security. He highlighted Poland’s existing commitments within NATO, including the ongoing development of its land, air, and naval forces.

He emphasized that Poland’s naval capabilities are primarily dedicated to the security of the Baltic Sea, a point understood by allies, including the United States.

“We Have a War on Our Border”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski stated that Poland does not plan to join the war in the Middle East, citing the ongoing war on Poland’s border with Russia and its aggressive, imperialistic ideology.

NATO Discussion of the Strait of Hormuz

Sikorski indicated that Poland would consider discussing the protection of the Strait of Hormuz if NATO were to raise the issue, out of respect for its American ally. However, President Karol Nawrocki has ruled out the participation of the Polish Armed Forces in such an operation.
