Tusk Calls for NATO Response Following Medvedev’s Threat

Following a provocative statement from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev regarding EU citizens, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has urged NATO allies to take escalating Russian incursions seriously.

Medvedev’s Warning to EU Citizens

On Friday, May 29, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a message to European Union citizens via the social media platform X. He claimed that their governments had unilaterally declared war on Russia and warned that their peaceful sleep had come to an end.

Tusk Demands Action from NATO

In response to Medvedev’s comments, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized the growing pattern of Russian provocations targeting Poland, the Baltic states, and Romania. He stated that all NATO members must finally treat these words and actions with the gravity they deserve.

Russian Drone Incursion in Romania

Russia has frequently violated the airspace of NATO and EU members, most recently on the night of May 28-29. During an attack on Ukraine, a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace; although jets were scrambled, the drone could not be downed due to safety risks to civilians.

The drone eventually crashed into a residential building in the Galati municipality, resulting in a fire and injuring two people. A similar incident occurred on the night of September 9, when drones violated Polish airspace, leading the military to intercept some of the machines as an act of aggression.

Disinformation Campaigns Against the Baltics

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service previously accused Latvia of facilitating a Ukrainian drone attack from its territory on May 19. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze denied the claims, noting that these accusations are part of a broader Russian disinformation campaign that has also targeted Estonia and Lithuania.
