Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke with Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar following TISZA’s electoral win, anticipating uniquely close ties between Warsaw and Budapest.
TISZA Party Secures Constitutional Majority
The TISZA party has achieved a constitutional majority in Hungary. Viktor Orbán congratulated Peter Magyar on his victory. Journalists from Wyborcza.pl, TOK FM, and Radio Zet are reporting from Budapest.
Tusk Discusses Warsaw Visit with Magyar
While in Seoul, Polish Prime Minister Tusk announced a conversation with TISZA party leader Peter Magyar, congratulating him on the election results. They discussed Magyar’s planned visit to Warsaw, which he has prioritized for obvious reasons.
Tusk stated he believes relations between Poland and Hungary will be “absolutely exceptional.”
Tusk: A Rejection of Authoritarianism
Tusk emphasized that the election results demonstrate a rejection of authoritarian trends, citing victories in Warsaw, Bucharest, Chișinău, and now Budapest. He believes this signals that Europe is not destined for corrupt and authoritarian rule, contrasting the situation with Viktor Orbán’s long tenure.
He added that all possible forces, including President Karol Nawrocki and PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, opposed Magyar and his party.
Magyar to Prioritize Poland Visit
Peter Magyar has reiterated that Poland will be the first country he visits as prime minister, citing a “thousand-year tradition of friendship” between Hungary and Poland.
Discussion of Ziobro and Romanowski
Tusk recalled that Orbán’s government blocked EU funding for Ukraine and suggested Magyar’s victory could be a turning point in this matter.
Tusk revealed he discussed former PiS politicians Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski – granted asylum in Hungary by Orbán’s government – with Magyar before the election, expressing hope to welcome them to Poland.
A Signal to the World
The election results are seen as a signal that the advance of autocrats can be halted.
