Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk refuted leaks regarding a potential government reshuffle, while Polska 2050 cautioned that changes without their consent would violate the coalition agreement.
Government Reshuffle Speculation Triggers Coalition Tensions
Reports of a possible government reshuffle have sparked political maneuvering within the ruling coalition. Polska 2050 has warned that any changes affecting its ministers without the party’s approval would be considered a breach of the coalition agreement.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk, however, has assured that he does not currently plan any changes to the Council of Ministers.
Tusk Rejects Reshuffle Claims
On Friday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated there were no current plans to conduct a government reshuffle. He was responding to reports in some media outlets suggesting potential changes to the Council of Ministers before the summer break.
“I don’t know where this rumor came from. Some media outlets started writing about my ambitious plans for another government reshuffle, but no, I don’t have such plans at the moment,” the Prime Minister said after the EU summit in Brussels.
Reports of a “Minor” Reshuffle
Earlier, RMF FM and Polsat News reported that the government might undergo a so-called “minor” reshuffle.
Speculation Focuses on Three Ministries
Unofficial reports suggest potential changes could affect the leadership of three ministries: Health, Culture, and Education. Names mentioned in speculation include Education Minister Barbara Nowacka (KO), Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska (Polska 2050), and Health Minister Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda.
Nowacka Defers to Prime Minister’s Decision
When questioned about the media reports, Barbara Nowacka emphasized that personnel decisions within the government are solely the Prime Minister’s responsibility. “Every minister is dependent on the Prime Minister’s decision,” she stated.
Polska 2050’s Strong Reaction
Reports of a possible reshuffle provoked a strong reaction from Polska 2050. According to DGP, party leader Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz emphasized in a message to Polska 2050 members that the party had not engaged in any discussions regarding changes to the government’s composition.
“We absolutely do not plan any changes to the composition of Polska 2050 ministers. There have been no coalition talks on this subject,” she wrote.
She also added that any dismissal of a minister belonging to a coalition party without that party’s consent would effectively constitute a breach of the coalition agreement. “Any changes to ministers of a coalition party without the consent of that party are equivalent to a breach of the coalition agreement. Therefore, this is not possible,” she noted.
Coalition Interprets Statement as Preemptive Move
Within the coalition, Pełczyńska-Nałęcz’s statement was interpreted as an attempt to preempt the Prime Minister’s actions and block any potential changes concerning the Minister of Culture.
Nervous Game Within the Coalition
Sources within the coalition acknowledge that the topic of a reshuffle has indeed surfaced in political discussions in recent days, although no official decisions have been made. Some believe the leaks may be part of a political game or an attempt to put pressure on coalition partners. However, at least according to the Prime Minister’s statements, a government reshuffle is not currently under consideration.
