Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk praised presidential envoy Piotr Nawrocki and announced a defense treaty with the UK on May 27th, while also addressing strained EU-US and Hungary-Ukraine relations.
Treaty with the UK and Strengthening Transatlantic Relations
Prime Minister Tusk expressed hope that tensions between some European countries and US President Donald Trump would subside. He affirmed Poland would not undermine European solidarity and cooperation.
Tusk asserted his strong pro-American stance, emphasizing that it involves jointly strengthening transatlantic ties. He highlighted Poland’s potential to improve relations between Europe and the United States, praising the efforts of envoy Nawrocki.
Defense Cooperation with the UK
A treaty between Poland and the United Kingdom will be signed on May 27th, significantly strengthening cooperation in defense and other areas. Tusk emphasized the importance of seeking reliable partners for sustained military collaboration.
UK’s Reintegration with the EU
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks a “reliable advocate” regarding the UK’s rapprochement with the European Union, and Tusk believes Poland is ideally suited for this role. London anticipates a reintegration, with public opinion post-Brexit having “radically reversed.”
Expanded Cooperation with Canada
Poland has also established new forms of cooperation with Canada in defense, nuclear energy, and intelligence services. Tusk plans an official visit to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with details of new agreements yet to be disclosed.
Poland as Intermediary for Ukraine
Tusk discussed his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating Poland will “take care of” Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar to improve relations between Budapest and Kyiv. These strained relations have hindered financial aid to Poland and Ukraine.
Tusk expressed hope that Magyar will work to restore full trust between Budapest and Kyiv, benefiting all of Europe. He believes Poland’s relationship with Magyar will prove successful and anticipates a revitalization of the Visegrád Group.
