TUSK ON US RELATIONS: “CONCESSIONS ARE NOT THE WAY”

Donald Tusk commented on EU-US relations, stating that concessions and weakness are ineffective methods in dealing with partners or opponents.

Tusk’s Position on US-EU Relations

Donald Tusk is in Brussels on Thursday, January 22, to participate in an informal European Council meeting. During a press conference, the Prime Minister was asked about the effectiveness of concession politics versus pressure, threats, or even the threat of retaliation from Europe in influencing Donald Trump.

“From the beginning, I’ve tried to explain that flattering, making concessions, showing weakness, that’s not a method. Partners don’t respect you then, let alone opponents. So it’s definitely good that the Union is mobilizing in some way and gaining more confidence in its own capabilities,” said the head of government.

Warning Against Anti-American Sentiments

The Prime Minister also warned against anti-American sentiments. “Now there is a crisis, whether it was very serious, the most serious in years. You need to have great patience and inner peace to survive these difficult months, but transatlantic ties are not something that is counted in months, or even years. These are entire decades. Thanks to these decades, we live, Poland is free and independent. Precisely because regardless of various tensions and sometimes hasty crises in relations between Western countries, in the end the entire community prevailed,” said the politician.

Personal Engagement in Transatlantic Relations

During the conference, the head of government also assured that he personally engages in the development of relations. “As the Prime Minister of Poland, I am engaged in transatlantic relations. Understanding the difference between domination and leadership is key for them,” he said.
