Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is planning a limited government reshuffle before the summer break, focusing on key ministries without major political upheaval.
Government Reshuffle Planned
Prime Minister Donald Tusk intends to implement changes within the government before the summer recess, according to unofficial media reports. This will be a “small reconstruction” affecting several key ministries, but without significant political disruption.
Ministries Under Review
Sources from RMF FM indicate that the ministries of Culture, Health, and Education may be affected by the changes. Within the ruling coalition, the aim is not a complete overhaul of the cabinet, but rather a correction of its functioning and an improvement in ratings ahead of upcoming elections.
Cosmetic Changes Aimed at Improved Performance
“The government doesn’t need turbulence now. This is meant to be a cosmetic change that will allow individual ministries to function better,” stated one anonymous coalition politician.
Pressure for Results and Political Effectiveness
A reconstruction had been previously announced, but following last year’s changes in the Council of Ministers, it was limited to minor adjustments. Now, almost a year later, the Prime Minister is reportedly ready for more decisive personnel moves.
Education Ministry Under Scrutiny
The Ministry of Education is receiving the most attention. Sources within the government suggest that Barbara Nowacka is fighting to retain her position, with criticism focusing on a perceived lack of decisiveness.
The issue of mandatory health education, which – despite earlier announcements – has not been introduced as a compulsory subject, is cited as an example. However, the Minister recently decided to ban the use of smartphones in primary schools from September 2026, which could improve her position.
Potential Changes in Culture and Health
Reshuffles may also affect the Ministry of Culture, currently headed by Marta Cienkowska. Signals suggest that the position could return to a politician from the Civic Coalition, with Deputy Minister Maciej Wróbel mentioned as a possible candidate.
The Ministry of Health, managed by Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda, faces an even more challenging situation. It is one of the most demanding areas within the government, and there are few willing to take on the role.
Within the coalition, there is also criticism of the earlier decision to “depoliticize” the leadership of the ministry. Some politicians believe that a lack of strong political backing hinders effective management.
Political Context of the Changes
The reconstruction also has a political dimension. Following shifts in the balance of power within the coalition – including reshuffles around the Polska 2050 environment – questions have arisen about the distribution of positions in the government. Unofficially, one of the positions previously held by this formation may be taken away.
The Prime Minister has previously emphasized the importance of stability and cooperation within the government, warning that voters will not accept internal conflicts and disputes.
