Tusk: Poczobut Released After Lengthy, Complex Negotiations

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the release of journalist Andrzej Poczobut on Tuesday, following a two-year diplomatic effort involving multiple countries.

Tusk Details Poczobut’s Release

Donald Tusk described the release of Andrzej Poczobut as a “long, complicated, and sensational story,” stating that numerous attempts were made to secure his freedom through negotiations with Belarusian authorities, including potential prisoner exchanges.

Tusk emphasized the difficulty of dealing with Belarusian authorities, noting their unreliability and last-minute reversals, even when an exchange seemed imminent.

Role of Security Services and International Partners

The release was achieved due to the detention in Poland of individuals wanted by Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Tusk stressed that this would not have been possible without the timely arrests made by Polish security services.

He highlighted the collaborative effort involving Polish diplomats, and strong support from Washington, as crucial to the successful outcome, also acknowledging the role of the President and his team in engaging with U.S. counterparts.

Two-Year Diplomatic Effort Concludes

Tusk characterized the exchange on the Polish-Belarusian border as the culmination of a two-year complex diplomatic game filled with dramatic twists and turns. He thanked the Polish services, diplomats, and prosecutors, as well as allies from the United States, Romania, and Moldova.

Background on Andrzej Poczobut’s Case

Andrzej Poczobut, a long-time collaborator with Polish media, including “Gazeta Wyborcza,” reported on the situation in Belarus. He was detained by Belarusian authorities in March 2021 and accused of “rehabilitating Nazism.”

Poczobut spent a prolonged period in pre-trial detention and was sentenced to eight years in a strict-regime penal colony in February 2023.
