Tusk: Poland Will Seek National Solutions Regarding ETS

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated Poland will demand tailored solutions concerning the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) during the upcoming European Council summit.

President Nawrocki Calls for Protection Against EU Climate Policy

President Karol Nawrocki sent a letter to the Prime Minister outlining his position on the ETS and the upcoming ETS2, set to take effect in 2028. He expects the government to adopt a stance that fully protects Polish citizens from the consequences of EU climate policy.

Tusk Criticizes Opposition’s ETS Proposals

Before Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, Tusk stated that energy prices would be the main topic of the EU summit. He criticized the opposition PiS party for proposing unrealistic solutions and suggesting leaving European agreements, including ETS.

Tusk cited former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s 2023 assessment that exiting ETS is not legally feasible within the European legal framework, stating those proposing it lack knowledge or have ill intentions.

Tusk Highlights Mentzen’s Assessment of His Assertiveness

The Prime Minister also referenced a statement by Konfederacja leader Sławomir Mentzen, who noted Tusk is more assertive than Morawiecki in dealing with the EU. Tusk agreed with this assessment.

Government Actions to Mitigate ETS Impact

According to the Prime Minister, the Polish government has taken numerous steps to “disarm ETS1” and shift the discussion around energy prices towards ETS2. Poland will seek specifically Polish solutions to address the significant and negative impact of ETS on energy prices.
