Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared that Poland will not respect agreements made in London without its participation, prompting the British government to reaffirm its commitment to broader European cooperation.
Tusk Rejects E3 Exclusions
Donald Tusk addressed Poland’s absence from the London meeting between President Zelensky and E3 leaders on Tuesday. Tusk stated that after speaking with Chancellor Merz, he communicated that Poland will not respect or be bound by any decisions made in its absence, asserting that Poland is a vital link for serious discussions regarding the future of Ukraine and the region.
British Government Rebuttal
Downing Street responded by emphasizing its desire to work with a wide range of European partners. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the UK’s history of collaborating within various “coalitions of the willing” and reaffirmed that solidarity with Ukraine remains the primary objective.
The British Embassy in Warsaw added that the UK and Poland remain determined to counter Russian threats, citing the security and defense treaty signed by Tusk and Starmer last month as proof of their ongoing cooperation.
Diplomatic Consultations and Future Formats
Tusk previously held talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the E3 format. Tusk announced that a meeting involving a “quintet” format, including Poland and Italy, is expected to be organized in the coming days.
Finland’s Perspective on European Representation
Finnish President Alexander Stubb met with Baltic and Nordic leaders in Tallinn to discuss the war. Stubb suggested that the UK, France, and Germany are the appropriate entities to represent Europe in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, dismissing the idea of the EU appointing a single person for peace talks.
Stubb noted that Ukraine’s political, military, and economic position is stronger now than at any point since the invasion began. He expressed understanding for Ukraine’s continued strikes on Russian targets and indicated that diplomatic efforts for peace will intensify during upcoming G7, European Council, and NATO meetings.
