Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the snap mayoral election in Krakow may be postponed until late September, pending the formal resolution of legal protests regarding the recent municipal referendum.
Election Timeline Challenges
Under the Electoral Code, the snap election for the mayor of Krakow must occur within 90 days of the referendum results that led to the recall of Aleksander Miszalski. Prime Minister Tusk stated that the final date remains subject to the resolution of protests concerning the May referendum.
While September is the likely timeframe, the Prime Minister noted that it could shift toward the latter half of the month. He cautioned that no official decision has been finalized yet.
Coalition Backs Monika Piątkowska
Prime Minister Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz have formally endorsed KO senator Monika Piątkowska for the mayoral seat. Tusk described the choice as an easy consensus that aligned perfectly with the senator’s own aspirations.
Piątkowska expressed pride in the nomination, citing her lifelong connection to Krakow, where she completed her education and raised her son. She thanked the government leaders for their unanimous support during the press conference.
Field of Contenders
Numerous candidates have already announced their intention to run, including Aleksandra Owca, Michał Drewnicki, Daria Gosek-Popiołek, Grażyna Zofia Świat, Bartosz Bocheńczak, Michał Klimek, Marian Banaś, and Marianna Schreiber. Łukasz Gibała, the runner-up in the 2024 mayoral race, has not ruled out another bid.
