Polish Prime Minister Tusk defends national security investments and criticizes opposition blocking defense funds.
Poland’s Position on Trump’s Peace Council
Donald Tusk announced that Poland will not participate in President Trump’s Peace Council. Any representative from Poland will only attend in an observational capacity. Tusk emphasized that Poland has no intention of sending Polish soldiers to the Gaza Strip and is not interested in co-financing development projects in Gaza.
SAFE Program: Defense Investment
Tusk highlighted the importance of the SAFE program, providing hundreds of billions of zloty in additional loans on favorable terms for Poland’s defense industry and air defense. He referenced recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, noting the potential threat of 400 armed drones to Poland.
Comparing Loan Conditions
Tusk mentioned loans taken during the PiS government from South Korea for military equipment, revealing they carry nearly twice the interest rate of the SAFE program. While not disclosing specific details, he contrasted these with the 3% interest rate offered by the SAFE program.
Investment in Huta Stalowa Wola
Tusk specifically addressed a 20 billion zloty investment in Huta Stalowa Wola steelworks from the SAFE program. He questioned the motives of those attempting to block these funds, warning they would be striking at the heart of Poland during a time of war.
SAFE Program Details
The Sejm recently passed the SAFE program legislation, with 236 votes for, 199 against, and 4 abstentions. Poland will receive nearly 200 billion zloty, with 80% going to Polish companies. These 3% interest loans will be repaid until 2070, with a 10-year grace period on capital repayment.
