Tusk to Open New Deputy Posts as Civic Coalition Holds Regional Election Battles

Premier Donald Tusk will hold the Civic Coalition’s first internal elections since its 2023 transformation, with March 8 set for choosing regional and national leaders across Poland.

March 8 Election Calendar Set

The Warsaw District Court approved the modified statute of the Civic Coalition on 24 November, formally transforming the party into an elected coalition. The newly convened National Council met Friday evening and adopted the election calendar, stipulating that both the party president and regional leaders will be elected on March 8.

National and Regional Elections Open to All Members

Membership in the party confers the right to vote in all elections, with regional and district structures open to every member. The upcoming ballots will also include new members who formerly belonged to Modern and Initiative Poland.

Regional Races Intensify Across the Country

Contests in Greater Poland, for example, feature candidates such as Deputy Minister of National Education Marcin Bosacki, MPs Jarosław Urbaniak and Mariusz Witczak, and the mayor of Rokietnica, Bartosz Derech. Former longue‑évée leader of the region’s Civic Coalition, Rafał Grupiński, may also seek re‑election. In Podkarpacie, the incumbent regional head faces challenges from MP Zdzisław Gawlik, MP Joanna Frydrych, and Deputy Mayor Rzeszów Marcin Deręgowski. Other regions such as Lublin, Opole, Lower Silesia, Pomerania and the South‑East also report contested positions, with candidates including former MPs and local politicians.

New Deputy Leadership Slate Planned

After the March elections, the National Council will elect the board, which will include 15 deputy chairs and the Secretary‑General. The board is expected to retain many high‑profile figures: Senate President Małgorzata Kidawa‑Błońska, former Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, former Health Minister Izabela Leszczyna, Deputy Speaker Dorota Niedziela, and several other senior civil‑service and elected officials. Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski and Minister of Finance Andrzej Domański are also expected to join.

Inclusion of Former Modern and Initiative Members

In line with the party’s expansion, former Modern and Initiative Poland members are integrating into the new structure. The European MP Dariusz Joński, former Minister of Economy, has already submitted a membership application, while former modernist parliamentarians and local politicians are expected to occupy new committee positions under the Civic Coalition banner.
