Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warns that a US military intervention in Greenland would be a ‘catastrophe’ and ‘end of the world’ as we know it.
Tusk Calls US Greenland Intervention ‘Catastrophe’
During a Thursday press conference, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was asked about the possibility of a US military takeover of Greenland. “Today may not be the time or place for a detailed analysis of the geopolitical and military consequences of a potential US armed intervention in Greenland,” Tusk stated. “This would be, in a political sense and from our point of view, a catastrophe. A conflict or an attempt to seize territory of a NATO state by another NATO state – and by the United States at that – would be the end of the world as we know it, which for decades has guaranteed our security.”
Tusk on Trump’s Unpredictability
The prime minister emphasized that he “doesn’t want to speculate” whether taking over Greenland is possible. “You know my critical attitude toward many decisions and events that take place on the other side of the Atlantic. I never hid that. I can only say what I’ve always known: unfortunately, no scenario can be ruled out, considering the actions of President Trump’s administration. Every scenario is possible,” Tusk stressed. The head of government revealed that Trump, during conversations with him during his first term, had repeatedly made it clear that “unpredictability and surprising, especially allies, is a method of action to which he is attached.”
Polish Troops Not Planned for Greenland
Earlier, the prime minister was asked by a Reuters reporter whether Poland, like France, Germany, Sweden and Norway, would send its troops to Greenland. “No, we are not planning to send Polish soldiers to Greenland,” the politician replied briefly.
Former Premier’s Response
The same day, former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told Radio ZET that in the matter of Greenland, Poland has no influence on the situation. “We should observe and be restrained,” assessed the PiS politician. As he emphasized, he hopes that Denmark will reach an agreement with the United States.
