Tusk Welcomes Trump’s Decision on U.S. Troop Increase in Poland

Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly thanked President Karol Nawrocki and U.S. officials on Friday for their role in securing an additional 5,000 American troops for deployment to Poland.

Trump Announces Troop Reinforcements

On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the deployment of 5,000 additional soldiers to Poland, citing the recent electoral success of President Karol Nawrocki and the strength of their bilateral relationship. Trump did not disclose specific operational details regarding the move.

President Nawrocki responded late Thursday, expressing gratitude for the U.S. president’s friendship and acknowledging the practical security benefits of the decision for Poland.

Government Response and Implementation

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the news on Friday, stating that the focus has now shifted to the implementation phase involving the Pentagon and U.S. commanders in Europe. He emphasized that this outcome resulted from a coordinated effort between the president, government ministries, and diplomatic services.

Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that the U.S. military requires time to manage the logistics of relocating forces. He clarified that the final positioning and composition of these units remain under U.S. authority, while reports from Reuters suggest that previous plans to rotate 4,000 troops were cancelled following the new announcement.

Diplomatic Perspectives on NATO Presence

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, speaking from a NATO ministerial meeting in Helsingborg, characterized the development as maintaining the U.S. troop rotation at roughly current levels. He credited Polish officials and international allies for sustaining the nation’s reputation regarding defense commitments.

Sikorski confirmed that Poland’s permanent representative to NATO, Jacek Najder, is currently coordinating the technical details of the deployment with his American counterparts.
