Two Drones from Russia Crash in Latvia

Two drones originating from Russia crashed in eastern Latvia overnight, prompting airspace alerts and emergency measures across the Latgale region.

Airspace Alerts in Latgale

The Latvian Armed Forces reported that two drones crashed in the eastern part of the country overnight, specifically in the Latgale region. Authorities issued airspace warnings for the Balvi, Ludza, and Rēzekne districts, advising residents to seek shelter and secure their homes by closing doors and windows.

Strike at Oil Depot

According to LSM, the two foreign drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia. One drone reportedly struck an oil depot on Komunal Street in Rēzekne, where smoke was observed around 03:30 local time. The crash site of the second drone has not yet been identified.

Military and Emergency Response

The State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) conducted thermal imaging inspections of the oil tanks and found no abnormal temperature increases. Maris Tutins of the National Armed Forces stated that the military received several signals regarding airspace violations, prompting the deployment of air defense and Baltic airspace patrol units.

Strengthened Border Security

LETA reports that similar warnings have been issued to residents in eastern Latvia in recent months, likely involving drones from the Russia-Ukraine war approaching Latvian airspace. In response, the military has strengthened air defenses along the eastern border by deploying additional units.
