Two U.S. Congressmen Resign Amid Scandal

Two U.S. Congressmen, Swalwell and Gonzales, have resigned from their posts facing allegations of sexual assault and an ethics investigation into a romantic relationship, respectively.

Swalwell Resigns Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Congressman Eric Swalwell’s decision to resign is intended to avoid public humiliation, according to CNN. Swalwell stated he would fight “serious, false accusations” made against him but acknowledged taking responsibility for past errors in judgment.

Swalwell emphasized that expulsion from Congress without due process is wrong, but conceded that the allegations distract from his duties, prompting his resignation.

A former staffer accused Swalwell of sexual assault, alleging non-consensual sex after an evening of drinking. CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the accusation last week.

Three other women have also accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct, alleging he sent them nude photos and sexually explicit messages. Swalwell has repeatedly denied the allegations.

His resignation followed the House Ethics Committee’s decision to launch an investigation, alongside a separate investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Gonzales Resigns Over Relationship Investigation

Tony Gonzales announced his resignation due to an ethics investigation into alleged violations and a relationship with a staff member.

The San Antonio Express-News first reported on the matter in February, publishing messages between Gonzales and his former assistant, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, indicating a romantic relationship in 2024.

Santos-Aviles died in September 2025, with the circumstances of her death not fully publicly explained. Investigators found no evidence of third-party involvement.

Gonzales, 45, served in the U.S. Navy before entering politics and had been a member of the House of Representatives since 2021. He previously announced he would not seek re-election in November due to the allegations.
