The U.S. Ambassador to Poland criticized allies for failing to support the U.S. and Israel, as Trump considers withdrawing from NATO.
Trump Announces Potential NATO Exit
President Trump announced Wednesday he is considering withdrawing the United States from NATO and expressed his “disgust” with the alliance. He questioned why allies wouldn’t reciprocate U.S. support, citing a lack of assistance when needed.
Trump stated, “They didn’t turn out to be friends when we needed them,” and argued that support has been largely one-sided.
U.S. Assistance to Allies Highlighted
Ambassador Mark Brzezinski emphasized past U.S. aid, recalling assistance to the United Kingdom during the Falklands War with rockets, intelligence, and logistics. He also cited support for France and other European nations in various operations.
Allied Refusal to Support U.S. Actions
The U.S. recently faced refusals from Italy and France regarding the conflict in the Middle East. Italy denied landing rights to American fighter jets, while France refused to allow the transport of weapons.
Threats Regarding Iran and Potential Strikes
Trump indicated the U.S. would “fairly quickly” leave Iran but did not rule out renewed action. He stated the U.S. would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and reserved the right to launch targeted attacks if necessary.
Claims of Iranian Appeal for a Ceasefire
Trump claimed the “president of the new Iranian regime” requested a ceasefire, contingent on the Strait of Hormuz being open and free. Iran has denied any such conversation took place.
NATO Described as a “Paper Tiger”
In an interview with The Telegraph, Trump described NATO as a “paper tiger” and stated he seriously considers withdrawing the U.S. from the alliance. This signals a diminished view of Europe as a reliable defense partner, particularly after European nations declined to send ships to the Middle East to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
Ambassador’s Criticism on Social Media
Ambassador Brzezinski wrote on X, “Funny. When our allies call, we always pick up. But when the situation is reversed? Not so much! Those who now justify refusing to support the U.S. president or America in defending them and the world, by claiming we didn’t ‘consult’ with them first, are the reason we didn’t. If we had been foolish enough to ‘consult’ with them, they would have stopped us from acting.”
He further questioned, “When we call, we get chased. But for how much longer?”
