U.S. and Israeli forces have struck over 8,000 targets in Iran since February 28th, significantly degrading Iranian naval, air, and missile capabilities, according to officials.
Trump Outlines Objectives
Former President Trump stated that the goal of U.S.-Israeli military operations in the Middle East is to “completely weaken Iranian missile capabilities, launchers, and everything associated with them,” targeting an “Iranian base of industrial defense.”
Trump also indicated a desire to eliminate the Iranian Navy and Air Force, emphasizing the priority of preventing Tehran from developing nuclear capabilities and promising a “quick and decisive” response to any Iranian efforts in that direction.
Scale of U.S. Strikes
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper announced in a video statement that the U.S. military has hit over 8,000 targets in Iran since the conflict began on February 28th.
Cooper stated that this included 130 Iranian vessels, constituting the largest elimination of a navy in three weeks since World War II, adding that “the Iranian navy is not sailing.”
Degradation of Iranian Capabilities
The U.S. military is reportedly “eliminating thousands of Iranian missiles, advanced offensive drones, and the entire Iranian navy” used to disrupt international trade.
Cooper asserted that Iranian naval and tactical air capabilities have been severely diminished, and their ability to launch rockets and drones has been significantly reduced compared to the start of the conflict.
Conflict Origins and Regional Impact
The conflict began with Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran, which retaliated by attacking Israel and Arab nations in the Persian Gulf region, including U.S. military bases and civilian infrastructure like airports and petrochemical facilities.
Iran also blocked free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, halting oil exports from the Middle East.
Strait of Hormuz Security
Donald Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz “will have to be guarded and watched by other nations that use it.”
He added that the U.S. would assist other countries in securing the strait if requested, but this should not be necessary once the threat from Iran is eliminated.
Strategic Importance of Khark Island
The coral island of Khark in the northern Persian Gulf may become a key battleground in the war, as it is the primary departure point for Iranian oil tankers, a major source of funding for the Iranian government.
