State Department allows non-essential U.S. personnel and families to leave Israel due to security concerns amid heightened Middle East tensions.
Departure Authorization
In a February 27, 2026 communiqué, the U.S. Department of State authorized the departure of non-key government personnel and family members of U.S. government staff from the diplomatic mission in Israel due to security threats.
The agency clarified that this authorization does not constitute an order to leave the country, but rather allows employees to independently decide whether to depart.
Ambassador’s Urgent Appeal
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee emailed embassy employees, urging those who wish to leave to do so “by today (February 27).” He recommended reserving any available flight from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, noting heightened interest in flights from Israel.
“Focus on finding a seat to any destination from where you can continue your journey to Washington, but the priority will be to leave the country as soon as possible,” Huckabee wrote according to The New York Times.
Middle East Tensions
The departure authorization comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with media reports suggesting the United States is preparing for a potential attack on Iran.
While diplomatic talks continue between the U.S. and Iran over the nuclear program, many indicators suggest conflict in the region is becoming increasingly likely.
Increased Military Presence
The U.S. has significantly bolstered its military presence in the Middle East recently, deploying two aircraft carriers, numerous warships, and hundreds of fighter jets.
CNN notes this represents the most substantial increase in American air and naval forces in the region “since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.”
High Probability of Conflict
According to Axios, the United States may be more inclined toward military action against Iran than is apparent, with sources indicating a 90% probability of conflict breaking out.
Israeli officials reportedly believe an attack could occur within days, and Israel itself would likely be involved in any military action against Iran.
In the event of a joint Israeli-American attack on Iran, Israel would be a natural target for Tehran’s retaliation.
