U.S. F-15 Shot Down, Iran Offers Reward for Crew Member

An American F-15 fighter jet was downed over Iran, prompting a search and rescue operation and a reward offer for the capture of its crew.

Search and Rescue Operation Underway

Search efforts are ongoing for a member of the U.S. F-15E fighter jet crew that was shot down over Iranian territory. The pilot has been located, but the weapons systems officer remains missing, with the situation described as dynamic and high-risk due to the potentially hostile operating environment.

A rescue operation was launched immediately after contact was lost with the aircraft, utilizing HH-60 Pave Hawk and HC-130J Combat King II helicopters and aircraft, specialized for Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) missions.

Elite Rescue Teams Deployed

Members of the elite Pararescue (PJ) teams are also involved in the operation. This highly specialized unit within the U.S. armed forces is trained for operations in extreme conditions, including enemy-controlled territory, and has a history dating back to World War II and the Vietnam War.

Pilot Rescued, Weapons Systems Officer Missing

The F-15E pilot has been found and evacuated, though details regarding their health have not been released. The search for the weapons systems officer continues to be significantly more challenging.

Potential for Direct Operations in Iran

It is unclear whether U.S. forces are operating directly within Iran, but CSAR procedures allow for the possibility of rescue teams landing in enemy-controlled areas to recover personnel.

Iranian Response and Reward Offer

Iranian authorities have launched their own search operations and have appealed to citizens for assistance in locating the downed aircraft’s crew. A reward of 10 billion tomans (approximately $76,000) has been offered for the delivery of the pilots alive.

This action highlights the potential propaganda and strategic importance of capturing American airmen, which could be used as leverage in political negotiations.

Further Incidents: A-10 Downing and Helicopter Fire

The regional situation escalated further with reports that Iranian anti-aircraft defenses also shot down a U.S. A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft, with the pilot rescued by the U.S. Navy. Additionally, two helicopters involved in the rescue operation were reportedly fired upon, indicating ongoing direct threats.
