U.S. Forces Strike Boat in Caribbean, Trump Declares War on Cartels

U.S. military forces attacked a vessel in the Caribbean Sea, allegedly targeting drug traffickers, as former President Trump asserts a conflict with Latin American drug cartels.

U.S. Southern Command Confirms Strike

The U.S. Southern Command stated the target was suspected of drug trafficking, operating along known smuggling routes. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling known drug smuggling routes in the Caribbean and involved in related operations, according to a statement released Wednesday, March 25th on X.

The U.S. military released footage of the attack on the boat.

Casualties and Operation Details

According to the Associated Press, the armed forces have not provided evidence that the vessel was actually carrying drugs. The video shows the boat being destroyed by a powerful explosion. The military reported four “narco-terrorists” were killed, and no U.S. soldiers were injured. The operation, conducted by Joint Task Force Southern Spear, was authorized by SOUTHCOM commander General Francis L. Donovan.

Trump’s Actions Draw Scrutiny

The latest strike brings the total number of individuals killed in U.S. military strikes on suspected drug smuggler boats to at least 163 since the beginning of September. The administration of Donald Trump initiated operations targeting vessels belonging to individuals labeled as “narco-terrorists.”

“Armed Conflict” Declaration and Justification

President Trump has described the current situation as an “armed conflict” with Latin American drug cartels, justifying the attacks as a necessary escalation to curb the flow of narcotics into the United States and reduce overdose deaths.

Criticism of Legality and Effectiveness

Critics have questioned the legality and effectiveness of the attacks on boats. They point out that fentanyl, a major contributor to overdose deaths, is typically smuggled into the U.S. overland from Mexico, where it is produced from precursors imported from China and India.

Operations Amidst Broader Conflicts

The Associated Press notes that strikes on boats in Latin America continue even as the U.S. military focuses on operations in the Middle East. Warships and aircraft are conducting extensive attacks on Iran, and additional Marine and 82nd Airborne Division troops are being deployed to or are en route to the conflict zone.
