U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed a proposed 45-day ceasefire in the conflict with Iran, raising tensions further, CNN reported Monday.
Proposed Truce Rejected
A 45-day ceasefire plan, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, was rejected by U.S. President Donald Trump, according to CNN sources within the White House.
The proposal, submitted Sunday evening to both the U.S. and Iran, was put forward by mediators hoping a temporary truce would allow for negotiations towards ending the conflict.
Concerns from Both Sides
A White House representative described the plan as “one of many ideas.” CNN reports that Iran also appears to have rejected the proposal, fearing a ceasefire would allow opponents to prepare for continued warfare.
Trump’s Ultimatum and Press Conference
Mediators are hoping to implement the plan before Trump’s ultimatum expires at 8 p.m. Tuesday (2 a.m. Wednesday in Poland). Trump has threatened to target Iran’s power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened by then.
Trump is scheduled to hold a press conference at the White House at 1 p.m. Monday (7 p.m. in Poland) regarding the conflict with Iran.
Mediation Efforts Stalled
Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are acting as mediators in the conflict, but peace talks stalled last week.
