Kyiv announced details of a defense alliance with the United Kingdom, formalized by a declaration signed in London on March 17th.
UK-Ukraine Defense Alliance Established
A defense alliance between the United Kingdom and Ukraine has been established, according to Kyiv. The declaration, signed on March 17th in London, signifies a deepening of cooperation in security and the defense industry.
The declaration was signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Expanding Cooperation and Shared Experience
Ukraine will share its combat experience, technologies, and solutions proven effective in the defensive war against Russia, particularly in areas like drones, electronic warfare, and modern warfare tactics. The UK will invest in and help increase arms production.
Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, stated this is a logical continuation of previous agreements, including a century-long partnership and a security agreement between Ukraine and the UK.
Joint Production and Long-Range Capabilities
Both countries will explore the possibility of joint production of long-range strike weapons and scaling up related programs. The UK will also consider effective mechanisms to increase production volumes and support these solutions, moving beyond single deliveries to build a joint defense industrial ecosystem.
Addressing Critical Defense Gaps
Kyiv and London are collaborating to address critical gaps in air defense, including drone interception, detection systems, and countering cruise missiles, as well as enhancing capabilities against ballistic missiles.
A New Security Architecture for Europe
Zhovkva emphasized that this is a matter of security not only for Ukraine and the UK, but for all of Europe. He described it as a joint effort to shape a new European security architecture based on experience, technology, and mutual trust, with Ukraine as a full partner and co-creator of security.
A Long-Term Partnership
Zhovkva stated the new declaration marks a new, long-term stage in Ukrainian-British cooperation, effectively a “real defense alliance.”
