Ukrainian drone defense specialists deployed to the Middle East have reportedly intercepted Shahed drones, as Ukraine seeks arms in return for its technology.
Ukrainian Forces Intercept Iranian Drones
According to BBC Ukraine, Ukrainian specialists in counter-drone units deployed to the Middle East have downed the first Shahed-type drones launched by Iran. These drones are used by Iran to attack countries in the Persian Gulf region and were destroyed using Ukrainian-made interceptor drones.
Deployment of Personnel and Systems
Ukraine has sent both interceptor systems and specialists to operate them to countries in the region. RBK-Ukraine reports a total of 228 personnel are undertaking missions in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Jordan.
Gulf States Interested in Ukrainian Drone Technology
Ukrainian drone manufacturers have received dozens of cooperation proposals from Gulf states interested in purchasing interceptor systems, BBC Ukraine reports. Discussions are currently underway to establish partnerships with individual countries.
Zelenskyy Highlights Ukraine’s Drone Defense Experience
“If we talk about small air defense, that is, how to act in the case of massive Shahed attacks, I think no one has as much experience as we do,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Friday.
Potential Arms-for-Drones Exchanges
According to Intelligence Online, Ukraine is negotiating with Qatar for 12 used Mirage 2000-5 aircraft in exchange for anti-drone systems. President Zelenskyy previously stated Kyiv is prepared to make such deliveries in exchange for Patriot missile system ammunition.
Escalating Regional Conflict
Israeli and U.S. airstrikes against Iran have been ongoing since February 28th. In response, Iran is attacking Israel and several Gulf states, targeting both U.S. bases and civilian infrastructure.
