President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Belarus may be drawn into the conflict to support Russian operations, prompting a defiant response from Alexander Lukashenko regarding potential border escalations.
Ukraine’s Strategic Warning
In mid-May, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian intelligence identified attempts to involve Belarus in the war, evidenced by increased cooperation between Alexander Lukashenko and Russian officials.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia is considering operational plans targeting either the Chernihiv-Kyiv axis or NATO member states from Belarusian territory. Kyiv has signaled that any such aggression would render Minsk a direct participant in the conflict.
Military Preparedness and Target Lists
The commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, known as “Madziar,” confirmed that 500 potential targets within Belarus have been identified and will be engaged if the country officially enters the war on Russia’s side.
Lukashenko’s Response to Accusations
On May 29, Alexander Lukashenko addressed the threats, citing agency reports from BelTA. He dismissed the list of 500 targets as “empty talk,” claiming that Ukrainian military leadership understands the futility of opening a new 1,500-kilometer front.
Lukashenko denied the presence of Belarusian soldiers in Ukraine, asserting that Kyiv is being pressured by European partners. He warned that any military attack on Belarusian territory would fundamentally alter the character of the ongoing war.
Comments on Opposition Figures
The Belarusian leader also addressed the visit of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Ukraine. He accused her of attempting to form a militant group consisting of Belarusians, Ukrainians, Poles, and Lithuanians to launch an incursion into a Belarusian border town.
