Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposes that Poland shoot down targets over Ukraine, citing a need for joint decisions on defense.
Zelenskyy’s Proposal to Poland
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested that Poland shoot down targets over Ukraine, specifically mentioning the possibility of targeting objects over western Ukraine.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine has a defense system in place and can shoot down anything flying towards it or Poland, and that Poland could do the same.
Potential Alliance and Geopolitical Context
Zelenskyy mentioned that this could also involve other countries like Romania, but noted that Ukraine is not counting on other nations for help.
Poland and Romania are countries whose airspace has recently been breached by Russian drones.
Polish Response and International Diplomacy
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that he discussed Zelenskyy’s proposal with him during a visit to Kyiv on September 12-13.
Sikorski noted that any such operation would require a coalition decision, as Poland’s assets in this area are part of a larger alliance effort.
Upcoming Meeting with Trump and Security Guarantees
Zelenskyy also announced plans to meet with US President Donald Trump next week during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Zelenskyy aims to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia with Trump.
Security Guarantees Before Conflict Resolution
Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine needs security guarantees before the conflict with Russia is resolved, agreeing with French President Emmanuel Macron on this point.
He emphasized that waiting for a clear agreement on ending the war could take too much time, and that security guarantees are needed sooner.
