Debris from a downed Ukrainian drone has been recovered in Moldova, prompting President Maia Sandu to call for urgent defense upgrades, while Latvian forces successfully intercepted a separate aerial intrusion.
Moldova Confirms Drone Incident
Moldovan border surveillance detected an airspace violation between Sunday and Monday. Following an investigation by defense officials, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the wreckage found in a field belonged to a Ukrainian drone, noting that the device had exploded.
Despite the drone’s origin, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry held Russia responsible for the breach, citing the illegal war in Ukraine. Chisinau remains in close contact with Kyiv regarding the incident and continues to summon the Russian ambassador in response to regular aerial intrusions.
Sandu Calls for Modern Defense
President Maia Sandu stated that the conflict in Ukraine has exposed critical gaps in Moldova’s security. She emphasized the urgent need for advanced interception drone technology and new legislative frameworks to streamline local production of defense assets.
Latvia Intercepts Aerial Threat
Latvian authorities issued a national alert on Monday morning regarding a potential airspace violation. Citizens were instructed to seek shelter and maintain safety protocols as military forces tracked an incoming object.
Allied fighter jets, reportedly French aircraft, successfully shot down the drone over the eastern Latgale region by 9:00 AM. Authorities confirmed the threat was neutralized shortly thereafter, and the airspace was declared secure by 9:20 AM.
