Ukrainian Embassy Reacts to Kanał Zero Report Showing Normal Life in War-Time Russia

Controversial Kanał Zero report from Kaliningrad showing normal Russian life sparks criticism from Ukraine and experts.

The Report from Kaliningrad

Maria Wiernikowska, the author of the material, traveled to Russian Kaliningrad to show – as the report indicates – the daily life of enclave residents during the ongoing war. The camera accompanied conversations on streets, at markets, and in public spaces. Viewers saw shelves full of goods, comments suggesting no real economic crisis, and statements praising Vladimir Putin and Russian authorities.

The report presents an image of Russia as a normally functioning country, attacked by the West and unfairly isolated. The war in Ukraine appears only marginally, without mentioning its causes, consequences, or the scale of Russian crimes. The only clearly inconvenience for Kaliningrad residents mentioned is the lack of visas and inability to freely enter Poland.

Ukrainian Embassy Criticism

The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland reacted to the publication, issuing an official statement in which it unequivocally criticized both the content of the material and the map of Europe used in it.

In the further part of the communication, the embassy questioned the purpose and goal of publishing such material in Poland: “However, the question arises – what is the purpose of creating such informational material in Poland, which serves the interests of Russian propaganda? Does such material serve the interests of Poles, or is it an attempt to ‘understand and justify’ Russian war criminals?”

Expert Analysis

One of the most decisive assessments was presented by Professor Renata Mieńkowska-Norkiene from Warsaw University, commenting on the matter on TOK FM radio. The political scientist had no doubts about the nature of the message.

The expert pointed out that the report was made in Russia without visible restrictions from the local authorities. Professor Mieńkowska-Norkiene also did not hide her personal reaction to the material.

Journalist Commentary

Patryk Michalaski, a TVN journalist, also spoke out on the matter, pointing to specific fragments of the report in his commentary.

Michalaski also referred to sections where the report mocked the supposed economic crisis in Russia. “The material also mocked ‘they say you have a crisis,’ showing an elite market where everything is available.”

The journalist also reminded of other publications by Kanał Zero about Ukraine, including materials titled “Borders of Aid to Ukrainians,” “Privileges for Ukrainians Divide Poland,” and “Who Will Pay for Aid to Ukraine.”
