A 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen was arrested in Warsaw with investment gold linked to a Lublin fraud case where a 60-year-old man lost nearly 350,000 zloty.
Arrest in Warsaw
In Warsaw, police arrested a 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen with a large amount of investment gold. The investigation led to a fraud case in Lublin, where a 60-year-old man lost nearly 350,000 zloty, and the suspect was sent to jail.
Downtown police in Warsaw stopped a 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen for inspection last week, during which they found investment gold in the form of bars and coins. The intervention led to the discovery of a fraud thread that occurred in the Lublin area, and the man was sent to jail for three months.
Gold Discovery
The inspection took place in Warsaw. Police from Śródmieście (Downtown) noticed a 27-year-old man carrying a significant amount of investment gold – bars and coins. During the conversation, he could not logically explain the origin of the valuables and behaved nervously, which aroused the officers’ suspicions.
Fraud Investigation
Further actions and information exchange between police officers from KRP Warsaw I and officers from the property crimes department of KMP in Lublin led the trail to the Lublin region. It was established that the money with which the valuables secured in Warsaw were purchased came from a fraud committed in the Lublin area.
It turns out that the victim is a 60-year-old resident of Lublin. The man found an investment offer online that promised quick and high returns. He agreed to the proposed terms and decided to transfer the money: he sent part of his savings via online banking, and part to an intermediary. According to the accepted scenario, the intermediary was to sell the gold profitably and then deposit the funds into a trading platform. The 60-year-old man was convinced that his savings were safe. In total, he lost nearly 350,000 zloty.
Legal Proceedings
The detained 27-year-old was taken to a police cell, and the gold was secured. Police from Śródmieście recovered valuables worth over 100,000 zloty. As established, the victim realized he was a victim of fraud only after talking to police officers.
Lublin police brought the 27-year-old to the prosecutor’s office. He was charged with fraud involving property of significant value. At the request of the police and prosecutor, the court applied a three-month detention order against him. The man faces up to 10 years in prison.
Police Warning
Police warn that when managing assets – especially of higher value – and when investing, offers promising quick and high returns are often used by fraudsters, and the consequence may be the loss of savings.
