Ukrainian Man Brutally Attacked in Warsaw; Bystanders Failed to Intervene

A 20-year-old Ukrainian man was severely beaten in central Warsaw, with footage showing onlookers did not react to the assault.

Attack on Wiecha Passage

The incident occurred on Stefan Wiechecki Passage, known as “Wiecha.” Monitoring footage shows an assailant approaching the young man and beginning to strike him.

The attacker repeatedly kicked and punched the victim across the body. After the victim fell, the aggressor continued the assault. No one intervened.

Hospitalization and Arrest

Warsaw police reported the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The attacker, a 48-year-old Polish citizen, was apprehended hours after the attack.

Investigators determined the men had a prior dispute several days before the assault, and the aggressor decided to “administer justice.”

Legal Consequences

The 48-year-old faces charges of causing serious bodily harm. The Warsaw Śródmieście-Północ District Prosecutor’s Office has requested a three-month pre-trial detention, and he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Rise in Hate Crimes

Warsaw police are increasingly dealing with crimes involving violence or threats based on national, ethnic, racial, political, or religious affiliation, as well as xenophobic or religiously intolerant attacks.

Police statistics show a significant increase in hate crimes. In 2024, they received 126 reports of hate crimes. In the first six months of 2025, they already received 104 reports, an 84.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

Underreporting of Crimes

Experts believe the actual number of crimes against minority groups, particularly Ukrainians, is much higher than officially reported. Victims often do not report incidents of harassment or abuse to law enforcement.
