Ukrainians Detonate Russian Submarine in First Such Incident

Monday’s raid saw Ukrainian drones explode a Russian 636.3‑class submarine at the port of Novorossiysk, the Ukrainian Security Service said.

Ukrainian Underwater Drone Operation

The Ukrainian Security Service described a unique special operations mission in which “sea cotton”—a nickname for playful explosions—was carried out at Novorossiysk. The operation involved the SeaBaby class underwater drones.

Targeted Russian ‘Black Hole’ Submarine

The target was a 636.3‑class submarine, known in Russia as the “black hole” for its sound‑absorbing hull that makes it invisible to sonar.

According to the SBU, the SeaBaby drones successfully detonated the submarine in mid‑air, marking the first time such a vessel has been destroyed by underwater drones.

Damage and Consequences

The submarine sustained severe damage and was brought out of service. Four Kalibr missile launchers intended for use against Ukrainian territory were aboard.

Estimated Costs

Ukrainian officials estimate the value of the submarine at roughly $400 million. With current international sanctions, construction of a similar vessel could cost up to $500 million.

EU Sanctions Intensified

EU foreign ministers confirmed a decision to tighten sanctions against Russia. The blacklist now includes 49 ships transporting Russian oil and additional persons and companies from Azerbaijan, the UAE, and Pakistan involved in oil trade that circumvents restrictions.
