Unattended Luggage Triggers Partial Evacuation at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport

Security services evacuated approximately 200 people from Warsaw’s Chopin Airport on May 6 after a woman’s unattended luggage triggered a bomb squad inspection.

Security Response at Chopin Airport

On May 6, after 15:00, security services were dispatched to investigate unattended luggage in sector CDE of the departures hall at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport. The incident occurred near a café, leading to a partial evacuation of the hall and the closure of vehicle access on the terminal’s upper level.

Preliminary findings indicate a woman left the bag in the departures hall before leaving the terminal, likely traveling toward the city. Due to the potential threat, bomb disposal experts from the Nadwiślański Border Guard Unit were deployed to the scene.

Approximately 200 people were evacuated to allow for a safe inspection. The response included the airport fire brigade, two municipal fire brigades, and the police. Bomb disposal operations concluded around 15:55, revealing that the small bag contained only cosmetics rather than dangerous items. The owner has not yet come forward to claim the belongings.

Security Protocols and Liability

Such situations at airports require an immediate response, as every piece of unattended luggage must be checked according to security procedures. This process involves calling bomb disposal experts, evacuating terminal sections, and temporarily closing passages or access roads.

Individuals who cause such situations must face the consequences. Depending on the circumstances, law enforcement, the Border Guard, or the police may handle the matter, and owners may face penalties prescribed by regulations.

Public Transport Disruptions

According to WTP, the security intervention and blocked entrance caused disruptions for bus lines 148, 175, 188, and 331. These buses were rerouted through the Chopin Airport arrivals area.
