Up to 8,000 PLN for Homeowners: The New NFOŚiGW Rainwater Subsidy Program for 2026

The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management is launching a new program in 2026 offering homeowners up to 8,000 PLN to subsidize private rainwater retention and management systems.

New Subsidies for Rainwater Retention

The NFOŚiGW is introducing a new program to help homeowners and plot owners retain water on their properties. Funding covers reservoirs, pumps, and irrigation systems, with the possibility of retroactive accounting for certain expenses.

This initiative addresses the growing issue of drought and overburdened sewage systems during heavy rainfall. For many households, it provides a practical method to reduce gardening costs and utilize rainwater in daily operations.

Eligibility and Requirements

The program is intended for individuals owning residential buildings, including year-round houses and summer cottages. A critical condition is that the retention system must support household needs rather than commercial or agricultural activities.

The installation must be a permanent part of the property and demonstrate effective water retention. Simple barrels placed under gutters do not qualify; systems must have a minimum capacity of two cubic meters.

Financial Support and Retroactive Claims

The subsidy covers up to 90 percent of eligible investment costs, capped at 8,000 PLN. A significant feature is the ability to account for expenses incurred starting from July 1, 2024, allowing residents to recoup costs for systems already installed.

For example, if an owner spends 8,800 PLN on an underground 3,000-liter tank and irrigation system, the program can cover up to 8,000 PLN of that expenditure.

Application Timeline and Procedure

Applications are scheduled to open in the summer of 2026, handled by regional environmental protection and water management funds. While specific forms are pending, the process is expected to mirror previous digital filing procedures.

Projects funded by the program cannot be modified or repurposed for five years following completion. Furthermore, applicants who previously utilized the “My Water” (Moja Woda) program for the same scope of investment are ineligible for additional support.

Budget and Economic Impact

With a total budget of 173 million PLN sourced from the European FEnIKS program, the initiative aims to support over 21,000 households. The actual number of beneficiaries may be higher if individual project costs remain below the maximum limit.

Rainwater harvesting is becoming standard for new single-family homes, particularly those with large gardens. Beyond environmental benefits, the ability to use free water during drought periods provides tangible savings for families during peak summer months.
