US Ambassador Tom Rose honors Polish war veterans as Trump questions NATO allies’ commitment.
Tribute from US Ambassador
The Ambassador of the United States laid flowers at the Monument to Soldiers Fallen in Military Missions and Operations Outside the State’s Borders, located in Warsaw’s Mokotów district.
Tom Rose published photos on the X platform and wrote: “America pays tribute to Poland and its veterans.”
Trump Questions NATO Allies’ Commitment
Last week, President Donald Trump said on FOX News that “I am not sure whether NATO will be, if we ever need it.” He added: “We never needed them. They will say they sent troops to Afghanistan. And they did, but they kept a bit in the back, a bit away from the front lines.”
In response, Polish President Andrzej Duda wrote that “there is no doubt that Polish soldiers are heroes and deserve the highest respect for their service to the Fatherland.” Czech President Petr Pavel emphasized the sacrifices made by NATO troops in Afghanistan.
Poland’s Role in NATO’s Afghanistan Mission
The NATO military mission in Afghanistan was triggered by the activation of Article 5 of the Alliance’s treaty for the first and only time in history, on September 12, 2001, following Al-Qaeda’s terrorist attacks on the US.
The Polish Military Contingent in Afghanistan operated from 2002-2021, with up to 2600 soldiers at its peak. Poland lost 43 soldiers and one civilian in the conflict. Over 3500 NATO soldiers died during the nearly 20-year operation, including 2500 Americans.
