US Defense officials, during a press conference, revealed potential scenarios including a ground invasion of Iran, emphasizing a willingness to escalate pressure.
US Considers Military Options, Soldier Demands for Escalation
Pete Hegseth reported visiting a US base housing troops involved in “Epic Fury,” where Defense Department officials praised soldier bravery.
Hegseth stated soldiers requested “more bombs and bigger bombs,” rather than better equipment, living conditions, or repatriation, emphasizing a desire to “finish the mission.”
“New Regime Should Be Wiser”
The US Secretary of Defense asserted President Trump is not bluffing regarding threats to Iran, claiming a regime change has already occurred.
Hegseth stated the “new regime” should be “wiser” and accept a deal offered by Trump, warning of intensified action if negotiations fail, noting the Trump administration renamed the Department of Defense to the Department of War without Senate approval.
Opening the Strait of Hormuz
According to Donald Trump, more ships are traversing the Strait of Hormuz, and the US is prepared to ensure its passage.
Hegseth emphasized this is not solely a US problem, detailing numerous overt and covert operations to unblock the strait, stating Trump took on a difficult task on behalf of the “free world.”
While acknowledging the Strait of Hormuz is a concern, the US priority remains destroying Iran’s missile capabilities and, eventually, its navy.
Negotiating with “Bombs”
Hegseth affirmed ongoing, genuine negotiations with Iran, while simultaneously stating the US is “negotiating with bombs” to compel a deal.
He suggested Iran would be better off accepting an agreement, stating the priority is a signed agreement, but preparations for continued action are underway if talks fail.
Potential Ground Invasion Not Excluded
Regarding a “boots on the ground” operation, Hegseth stated no options are off the table, emphasizing the need to avoid telegraphing intentions to adversaries.
He claimed adversaries believe there are 15 potential ways to conduct a ground operation, adding that President Trump has learned from the experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the end of the operation will be determined by achieving objectives, a decision solely for Trump.
