Conflicting reports surround planned US-Iran negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, with a temporary ceasefire set to expire Wednesday evening.
US-Iran Negotiations Face Uncertainty
In recent days, inconsistent and often contradictory information has emerged regarding US-Iran negotiations. It remains unclear when, if ever, another round of talks will take place, as a two-week ceasefire is set to expire late Tuesday night.
Both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the terms of the ceasefire. US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of breaching the agreement, including obstructing the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran claims the American blockade of Iranian ports violates the terms.
Conflicting Signals and Travel Delays
Despite President Trump’s recent optimism about a quick resumption of talks, Iran has neither confirmed nor denied this information. Simultaneously, Trump has issued further threats against Iran.
US Vice President J.D. Vance was scheduled to participate in talks in Islamabad, but CNN reported uncertainty about his departure for Pakistan. Sources indicated a planned Tuesday morning flight had been postponed.
White House Meetings and Delegation Status
The White House plans additional meetings Tuesday to discuss future actions, with Vice President Vance’s participation. A White House representative confirmed additional political meetings involving the Vice President.
Axios Report and Potential Trump Meeting
Axios previously reported Vance, leading the US delegation, would depart for Pakistan Tuesday morning. However, it remained uncertain whether the Iranian delegation would attend. As of late Tuesday morning Eastern Time, CNN reported Iran had not confirmed sending representatives to Islamabad.
According to Axios, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner remain in the US and are expected to join Vance in negotiations. Their flight, originally scheduled from Miami to Europe and then Pakistan, departed Tuesday afternoon for Washington, D.C., suggesting a possible meeting with President Trump.
Analysis of Trump’s Approach
Maciej Czarnecki of Wyborcza.pl suggests President Trump’s chaotic statements regarding Iran stem from a combination of impulsiveness, hidden concerns, and tactical negotiation, potentially linked to questionable stock market transactions.
Trump Threatens Further Strikes
President Trump stated Tuesday he considers Wednesday evening the deadline for the ceasefire’s end and does not intend to extend it, adding he “expects further bombardments” of Iran if an agreement isn’t reached.
Lack of Trust and Historical Grievances
A significant lack of trust weighs heavily on negotiations, stemming from the long-standing and tense relationship between the two countries. The US distrust is rooted in the perception of Iran’s ideological system and its anti-American narrative.
Tehran points to negative historical experiences with the US since the mid-20th century, including two attacks during negotiations – one by Israel with US support in 2025, and another by both countries in early 2026, which initiated the current war.
