The Pentagon has canceled plans to deploy a 4,000-strong rotational armored brigade to Poland, prompting the Polish Foreign Ministry to demand immediate clarification regarding the shift in regional defense commitments.
Pentagon Reverses Deployment Plans
Reuters reported on Friday, citing two US officials, that the Pentagon has canceled the rotational movement of 4,000 American troops to Poland. CNN sources suggest the decision by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is part of a broader effort to reduce US force levels in Europe, following the May announcement to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.
US Army General Christopher LaNeve confirmed to the House of Representatives on Friday that the military received instructions to scale back, concluding that it was most sensible not to deploy this specific brigade to the theater of operations.
Polish Government Reaction
Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki stated that Warsaw is demanding explanations from the US, noting that communication regarding the troop movements was insufficient. Bosacki emphasized that Poland, a vital ally, should have been informed well in advance of such decisions.
Despite the cancellation, the ministry noted that American assurances—including those from President Donald Trump to President Nawrocki—remain that the size and capabilities of US forces in Poland will not be weakened. Bosacki added his view that the US presence should eventually become permanent rather than rotational.
Leadership Assurances
Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the situation on Friday, stating he received assurances that the decision is logistical in nature and will not negatively affect deterrence or Polish security. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz echoed these sentiments, stressing that there is no decision to limit the overall US presence in Poland.
Kosiniak-Kamysz pointed to the V Corps forward command in Poznań, the division command in Bolesławiec, and various logistical and air bases as symbols of a lasting US commitment. He attributed the current adjustments to President Trump’s mandate to reduce the contingent in Germany, which necessitates broader force realignments.
Ongoing US Military Presence
There are currently approximately 10,000 US troops stationed in Poland, mostly under a rotational system. Many of these forces were deployed as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, launched in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea.
The armored brigade specifically affected by the reversal was part of this mission. These units typically rotate into Poland with heavy equipment, such as Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles, for nine-month deployment cycles.
