The university police declared an alarm around 16:00 local time, posting on X a first report that an armed assailant was near Shannon Library at 160 McCormick Road.
They urged students, faculty, and all on campus to RUN, HIDE, AND FIGHT, and later said the alarm sirens were heard in the south of the campus, according to USA Today.

On social media, TVN correspondent Marcin Wrona said a group of students had barricaded themselves in a lecture hall, including his daughter. He posted a photo of the barred doors and criticized the lack of safety in schools.
Order to Cancel Alarm
University police updated the situation on X, and after two hours the alarm was lifted because no armed intruder was confirmed nearby.
Wrona wrote that the university police had “confirmed no intruder. Alarm cancelled. I wish no one else experiences what Maria (Maja) did.”
Police Investigation
The university police described the situation at Shannon Library as “clean” and said an extensive investigation found no evidence of an attack or threat on campus or nearby.
The investigation is being conducted by Charlottesville police, fire, and campus police, according to city spokesperson Kyle Ervin.
Background of Previous Attacks
The alert was issued years after the university’s worst shooting, when assailant Christopher Darnell Jones killed three students—Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry—and injured two.
