Brown University Shooting
On Saturday, December 13, a shooting occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulting in two student deaths and multiple injuries.
Suspect Identified – Claudio Neves Valente
Police determined that the shooter was 48‑year‑old Claudio Neves Valente, a former PhD physics student from Portugal who studied at Brown more than 20 years ago.
Investigators said Valente was familiar with the building where the shooting took place and had reportedly committed suicide after the incident.
MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro Found Dead
On Monday, December 15, the body of 47‑year‑old Portuguese physics professor Nuno Loureiro was discovered in the Boston suburbs, about 80 kilometers from Brown University.
Potential Link Between the Cases
Prosecutor Leah Foley stated that the suspect in the Brown shooting may also have been involved in the killing of the MIT professor, citing “numerous pieces of evidence” linking the two crimes.
Both authorities noted that Valente and Loureiro had previously studied together at the University of Lisbon.
Police and Investigation
Police have not yet released a motive for the shootings and are continuing to investigate the alleged connection between the incidents.
