Pentagon Planning Reduction of U.S. Personnel in NATO Advisory Groups
According to the Washington Post, the Pentagon is secretly working on limiting the number of U.S. military personnel in NATO advisory groups. The process is expected to take several years and could affect about 200 people employed in NATO’s Expert Centers, which conduct Alliance training.
Reduction of American Military Investments in European Defense
The Washington Post cited information from officials familiar with the matter. It was determined that by reducing U.S. personnel in NATO advisory groups, the Donald Trump administration wants to “limit Washington’s military investments in European defense.” It was also reported that the Pentagon does not plan to immediately withdraw all personnel but intends to stop replacing departing personnel with new representatives.
“Withdrawal of U.S. Personnel Would Mean Brain Drain”
Lauren Speranza, a high-ranking Pentagon official in the Joe Biden administration, stated what the consequences would be of limiting U.S. participation in NATO advisory groups. “We have significant operational experience that some of our personnel bring to these centers. Withdrawing U.S. personnel would mean brain drain,” Speranza told the Washington Post.
Donald Trump on “The Biggest Fear Related to NATO”
Donald Trump commented on NATO on Tuesday, January 20, during a press conference at the White House. The U.S. president said he “did more for NATO than any other person, living or dead.” “NATO must treat us fairly. My biggest fear related to NATO is that we spend enormous amounts of money on this Alliance and I know we will come to their aid, but I wonder if they will come to our aid,” he added.
