J.D. Vance defended US backing for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, asserting it wasn’t about Russia but opposing EU bureaucracy, during a Fox News interview.
Vance Praises Orbán’s Leadership
J.D. Vance described Viktor Orbán as a “great guy” doing a “great job,” noting the “fundamental changes” Hungary has experienced during his 16 years in power.
Vance stated the decision to support Orbán wasn’t based on misjudging polls, acknowledging the high probability of his electoral defeat. He emphasized Orbán’s willingness to oppose the “bureaucracy in Brussels” that he believes harms the United States.
Strategic Partnership with Hungary
Vance affirmed that supporting Orbán was “the right thing to do,” as the Hungarian Prime Minister has “stood with us for a very long time.”
He clarified that the support wasn’t primarily about Russia or Europe, but about Orbán being a “good partner” for both himself, President Trump, and the United States.
Progress in Iran Negotiations
Vance also discussed weekend negotiations with Iran in Islamabad, reporting some progress had been made and that the “ball is in the Iranians’ court.”
He questioned whether Iran would demonstrate sufficient flexibility and accept critical demands to reach an agreement, adding that the US has already made significant proposals.
US Concerns and Negotiation Tactics
Vance stated the US delegation left the talks believing the Iranian representatives present lacked the authority to reach a deal. He noted the US gained insight into Iran’s negotiation style.
The US seeks the complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s removal of enriched uranium, with the goal of US control over it.
Disagreements with the Vatican
Vance acknowledged potential disagreements with the Vatican, suggesting it would be best for the Vatican to focus on moral issues and internal Church matters, allowing the President to shape US policy.
He stated that disagreements with the Vatican are inevitable, but that the Pope’s advocacy for his priorities is generally positive.
Trump’s Criticism of Pope Francis
Vance referenced President Trump’s recent criticism of Pope Francis on Truth Social, where Trump accused the Pope of being “weak on crime” and “terrible on foreign policy.” Trump also expressed a preference for the Pope’s brother, Louis Prevost, calling him “fully MAGA.”
Trump stated he has no intention of apologizing to Pope Francis or retracting his criticism, and defended a circulated image of himself as a doctor, not Jesus.
Trump’s “Humor” and the Image Controversy
Vance described the image as a joke, stating Trump removed it because he believed many people didn’t understand his sense of humor.
