New York City council members have denounced a recurring series of attacks on the Polish Consulate General and the Jan Karski monument, which were defaced with red paint twice in three days.
Repeated Acts of Vandalism
On Friday morning, an unidentified perpetrator painted the doors and a portion of the facade of the Polish Consulate General in New York red, along with the Jan Karski monument. The NYPD Pulaski Association, representing police officers, noted that this was the second such incident within three days.
Consul General Mateusz Sakowicz confirmed to the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that law enforcement is investigating the matter. He stated there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was politically motivated.
City Officials Demand Swift Action
Council members Phil Wong, Virginia Maloney, Lincoln Restler, Harvey Epstein, and Frank Morano issued a joint statement on Saturday. The officials labeled the repeated vandalism unacceptable and called for an immediate response from law enforcement agencies.
The council members emphasized that Poland is one of America’s closest allies and recognized the contributions of Polish Americans to the city. They affirmed their support for the consulate, its staff, and the broader Polish-American community, describing the acts as an assault on diplomatic institutions and international friendship.
Ongoing Investigations
The council members are coordinating with Consul Sakowicz and the New York Police Department to ensure the perpetrators are identified and held accountable. The NYPD Pulaski Association is also actively involved, providing assistance to help prevent further acts of vandalism.
